Mother of Mercy
The Community of the Daughters of the Church is present in Alghero since 1960, with the main task of animating and supporting the Eucharistic Centre in the town. Mons. Adolfo Ciuchini, who belonged to the Mercedarian Order had a high esteem for religious life; he invited the Daughters of the Church to Alghero.
The Church of Our Lady of Mercy, located in the historic centre, preserves the sixteenth century Crucifix luckily arrived here in the seventeenth century Spanish shipwreck in the bay of Porto Conte due to a storm, and which is even today carried through the streets of the city in one of the most evocative processions of the Holy Week in Alghero, a significant expression of the popular devotion.
Daily adoration is attended not only by the faithful of Alghero, but also by the tourists who come here to relax and find solace for their spirit.
The Community is comprised of four Sisters who, besides animating and sustaining the Eucharistic adoration in the Church of Mercy, collaborate in the parish apostolate through catechesis, liturgical animation and as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion to the sick and the elderly.
