We know that everyone has a birthday and every human birth as a call for new hope in the world. The love of two human beings has joined with God in his creative work and the new child has the potential to be a channel of God’s love and peace to the world. Today the Holy Mother Church is celebrating the feast of the Birth of Mary. This feast provides us with an occasion for praise and thanksgiving in honour of the personal sanctity and vocation of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Mother of the Lord Jesus. The Bible doesn’t say anything about Mary’s birth, but we know that she was born. Her nativity is a cause for great joy as it is considered the" dawn of our salvation" as Pope Paul VI wrote in the document, Marialis Cultus in 1972. About Mary's nativity is found in the Apocrypha, principally the Protoevangelium of James which has been dated by historians prior to 200 AD. Like all parents, Mary’s parents Joachim and Ann loved God very much, and they were filled with gratitude to God for the gift of a child. They raised Mary as a child of God, teaching her to love and serve God. In the life of Mary when the angel Gabriel told her that she had been chosen to be the Mother of Jesus, she already had great faith in God. Her strong faith and trust allowed her to say yes to God’s plan for her. When Mary was born, the world did not know who she was. But her birthday has been described as the hope of the entire world and the dawn of salvation. Mary’s birth offers the greatest possible happiness to the world. Each time we celebrate her birth, we can confidently hope for an increase of peace in our hearts and in the world at large.
As we celebrate today Mary our mother’s birth, we honor Jesus too on this occasion. We thank God for the gift of life and give honor to both Mary and Jesus by showing respect and concern for one another and remembering that God has created each person with love and with a call to something very special in life. Mary who is our Mother always helps us whenever we are in need. Mary is the one who leads us to Jesus and teaches us how to go to Jesus; and the Mother of Jesus is our own and makes a family, with us and with Jesus. A mother in the family helps her children to grow up and wants them to grow strong; before we were born, our Mothers are our entire world: they enfold, nourish, and protect us, when we are born they continue to care for us, by comforting, nursing, and teaching us as we grow. Mothers do not stop being mothers just because they are grown. Our mother will always be our mother. So it is with our Blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary. She will always be with Jesus “Mother”, and she will always be our mother with Jesus. And if for whatever reason, our own birth mother is not quite all we would like her to be, our Blessed Mother stands ready, arms open to take us in. As our Mother, she will continue to nourish, protect, comfort, and teach us to grow. Through our daily prayers, we greet and thank her for her love and care and she hears all voices and accepts all people; she loves each and every one of us. Our mother celebrates our life with us at all times. So Let pray to our Mother “Holy Mary, help those in need, give strength to the weak, comfort the sorrowful, pray for God’s people”.
